Skyrim's 15-Year Door Glitch Finally Fixed by Dedicated Modder
The bizarre NPC behavior when opening doors in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has long been a fan meme. Characters crack the door open just a few centimeters — revealing empty void — then suddenly vanish. This quirk has persisted for about 15 years, dating back to the 2011 launch, tied to how the game handles loading screens.
The issue goes beyond the animation itself. Right before disappearing, NPCs abruptly lose shadows, appear overexposed, and suffer partial hair/eyebrow transparency failures. They literally go bald and "flash" before dissolving into thin air — an unmissable effect. The Dragonborn occasionally suffers the same fate, fixed only by reloading a save.
Modder wSkeever tackled this artifact with No Load Door NPC Fade. It doesn't force full door openings — that's still impossible without overhauling the loading system — but elegantly smooths the vanishing moment.
The mod properly handles lighting and character model fading, preventing NPCs from turning into glowing silhouettes before vanishing. Door transitions now feel less jarring and far less comical.
Bethesda's former lore master previously revealed mechanics like dynamic wars and carriage travel that could have made Skyrim if tech constraints hadn't limited the team.
