KRAFTON Reveals Open-World Action RPG Project Windless

At today’s State of Play, Krafton Montreal Studio officially announced Project Windless, an ambitious open-world action RPG set in the universe of the cult-classic Korean novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears. The game is slated for PS5 and PS5 Pro, though a specific release date remains under wraps.
Project Windless serves as a prequel, taking place 1,500 years before the events of Lee Young-do’s novels. Players take control of a Rekon, a member of a nomadic race of bird-warriors known for their immense physical power. Standing roughly 7 feet tall and dual-wielding massive blades, these humanoid avian warriors are a force to be reckoned with. The trailer showcased large-scale, Dynasty Warriors-style combat, where a single warrior takes on hundreds of enemies at once. Krafton Montreal is utilizing "innovative mass-rendering technology" to bring these realistic, sprawling crowds to life.
The game’s setting offers a refreshing departure from traditional Western fantasy tropes. The world is inhabited by four distinct races: Humans; the mighty, bird-like Rekons; the fire-wielding Tokkebis; and the reptilian Nhaga, who sacrifice their hearts to achieve immortality. The narrative promises to be dark and tragic, focusing on complex political conflicts and cultural clashes where the lines between hero and villain are blurred.
Krafton Montreal is emphasizing player agency, promising maximum freedom without forced direction. Players will forge their own paths, uncover hidden lore, and decide whether to form alliances or ignite wars. Beyond the massive skirmishes, the trailer teased tactical boss encounters that require precise strategy and pattern recognition.
This marks the first major title from Krafton Montreal since its inception. The team has been quietly developing Project Windless for years, drawing deep inspiration from Lee Young-do’s work. Krafton also confirmed that the game will be a purely premium single-player experience, with no multiplayer or live-service elements. A release is currently expected in late 2026 or early 2027.
