Santa Monica Studio Announces Remake of the Original ‘God of War’ Trilogy

Sony Santa Monica Studio has officially confirmed a remake of the classic God of War trilogy during State of Play. The Greek saga of Kratos is returning — players will once again follow the Ghost of Sparta’s journey from his vengeance against Ares to his final battle with Zeus.

The announcement came in the form of a short teaser featuring a speech by original Kratos voice actor Terrence Carson, who portrayed the Ghost of Sparta in God of War (2005), God of War II (2007), and God of War III (2010). No gameplay footage or screenshots were shown — only confirmation that Santa Monica is returning to the roots of the franchise. A release date has not been announced.

The original God of War trilogy launched on PS2 (the first two entries) and PS3 (the third installment), telling the story of a young Kratos and his brutal revenge against the Olympian gods. The first two games received an HD remaster for PS3 in 2009 as part of God of War Collection, while the third entry was remastered for PS4 in 2015. On PS5, the classic trilogy is currently accessible only via PS Plus Premium cloud streaming, making it unavailable to modern players without a subscription.

Rumors about a remake of the Greek saga have circulated since late 2023. Insider Nick Baker previously claimed that the project was being developed by Nixxes in collaboration with Santa Monica for the franchise’s 20th anniversary in 2025. Sony did not confirm that information at the time. The Valhalla DLC for God of War Ragnarök (2023) also hinted at a return to Greek mythology, featuring Kratos confronting his literal past self.

It remains unclear whether God of War: Ascension (2013) — a prequel to the original trilogy — will be included in the collection. Insiders in 2023 suggested that Sony planned to focus specifically on the core trilogy without spin-offs.
