Battlefield 6 Season 2 Fails to Revive Player Numbers—Steam Popularity Drops by 88%
After its highly anticipated launch in 2025, Battlefield 6 quickly became one of the most popular shooters on Steam. However, interest in the game has since dropped sharply—at its peak on release day, the player count hit 747,000, but now the PC player base has fallen by 88% from that all-time high.
Developers at Battlefield Studios and EA hoped that the launch of Season 2 would bring players back and attract a new audience. After a month-long delay, Season 2 introduced the large new map Contaminated, the VL-7 psychoactive smoke mode, and new weapons and vehicles. Future updates will add the Hagental Base map, the Nightfall night mode, and the final Operation Augur mode, inspired by Battlefield 1’s Operations.
Despite these additions, Steam stats show the update fell short of expectations: on February 17, the number of concurrent players was just 92,281—only 30,000 more than the day before, and still below the recent peak of 97,000. An anonymous developer revealed that the studio had hoped the update would bring back lapsed players and attract newcomers.
Experts and fans point to several reasons for the low engagement: a limited amount of new content, ongoing technical issues, and long delays between updates.
Season 2 in Battlefield 6 is split into three phases running through mid-April, and the developers promise to continue adding new content, including weapons, vehicles, and unique modes. Only time will tell if these gradual updates can win back the shooter’s player base.
