Todd Howard Shuts Down Starfield 2.0 Reboot Rumors

The rumors of a massive Starfield overhaul have been officially debunked. Bethesda Creative Director Todd Howard denied reports of a radical "2.0" reboot, clarifying that the upcoming update is designed specifically for those who already enjoy the core experience.

Speaking in an interview with Kinda Funny on February 18, Howard shed light on the project's future. Host Greg Miller noted that he and several other creators had already seen a preview of the upcoming content months ago and asked why the studio had remained silent for so long. Howard explained that late last year and early 2024 were dominated by the Fallout franchise and Fallout 76 support following the success of the TV show. However, Bethesda is now shifting its primary focus back to Starfield.

“Obviously, we’ve been working on a lot of Starfield content…I can tell everybody we are going to be talking about [the new content] really soon,” Howard noted. “We’re moving into a phase where we’re ready to talk about Starfield. And really show that in the right way, and what’s coming to the game. We’ve been doing a lot of work that we like a lot.”

However, Howard was quick to manage expectations regarding a "Starfield 2.0" status or a total conceptual shift. “You know, I’ve seen some of that, so for expectation-setting, I think it’s the kind of thing where if you love Starfield, we think you’re going to love this,” he explained. He also candidly admitted that the patch likely won't win over the game's harshest critics: “But look, if Starfield is something that didn’t connect with you right away, or you bounced off it, or found it boring in places, I don’t think this is going to change that fundamentally.” When pushed for a specific release window, Howard simply replied, “Soonish.”

Despite Bethesda’s relatively small staff of around 250 people — who are currently split between Fallout, Starfield, and the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls VI — Howard assured fans that their work on the space epic is far from over.
