No Hope for an Official Remaster, but Fans Persist: Bloodborne PC Remaster Gets Major Graphics Update

Aleksandr Manin

Modder fromsoftserve has released version 0.99.2 of their Bloodborne PC Remaster — a fan project that has been evolving for more than two years on top of the ShadPS4 emulator. The update improves visuals across multiple fronts: dynamic shadows, parallax occlusion mapping on most surfaces, enhanced lighting from lanterns, candles, and torches (which previously emitted no actual light), as well as new specular maps and revised color grading.

I’ve renamed the mod back to “PC Remaster,” since it now uses the game’s standard art direction — just with my dynamic shadow and lighting improvements. It features strictly remaster elements: higher-resolution textures, fully dynamic world lighting, removed baked shadows, new height maps for improved parallax rendering — and much more!

The news feels especially bittersweet in light of recent events. In February, Sony shut down Bluepoint Games — the studio behind the remaster of Shadow of the Colossus and the remake of Demon's Souls, widely considered the leading candidate for an official remake of Bloodborne. Now, the chances of seeing such a project seem close to zero. Meanwhile, the original creator of the world remains too busy — and too fond of the universe — to move forward with a sequel.

The mod is available for free and requires a legal copy of the game along with the ShadPS4 emulator. Online features — co-op, Chalice Dungeons, and asynchronous multiplayer — are not yet functional, though the emulator team continues working on them.

Back in January, we reported that Digital Foundry tested ShadPS4 and confirmed Bloodborne is now fully playable on PC at 4K and 60 FPS using a Ryzen 7 5700X and RTX 4080. In that sense, fromsoftserve’s mod is simply the icing on top of an already stable emulation experience.

Have you played Bloodborne on PC via emulator, or are you still hoping for an official port that may never come? Or maybe you’re a long-time Sony player who finished it years ago? Share your thoughts in the comments.
