PC gamers demand equality: Sony's temporary exclusives sales outside PlayStation are getting worse
PlayStation games are relatively poorly sold on PC due to Sony's reluctance to release them on this platform on the day of release. This became known from the analysis of the research company Newzoo.
The strategy in which games were first released on PlayStation 5 and only a few months or years later on computers led to a decrease in the number of PC players compared to projects that were released on multiple platforms simultaneously.
If you look at the statistics of the first three months after the release, only 13% of the total number of players receive temporary console exclusives on PC. However, in cases where similar AAA games are released simultaneously on all platforms, the PC brings about 44% of the total audience.
And this applies not only to games from Sony's internal studios. Third-party projects that initially only come out on Playstation later show poor results on PC.
The situation becomes more pronounced over time. The first PlayStation-exclusive ports showed the following results:
- Horizon Zero Dawn — 22% of PC players;
- God of War — 14%;
- Marvel's Spider-Man — 14%.
However, the share of PC players decreased for games released later.:
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart — 8%;
- Horizon Forbidden West — 7%;
- God of War: Ragnarok — 6%;
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2 — 5%.
"The key takeaway is that release timing has a significant impact on PC engagement. When a PC version arrives years after the console launch, much of the early lifecycle demand has already been captured on the primary platform".
Recently it became known that Sony is returning to the exclusivity strategy. According to journalist Jason Schreier, the company will not release large single projects of internal studios on PC.
