“Sorry I Didn’t Give You More Time”: Baldur’s Gate 3 Writer Explains Why Wyll Got the Least Content

Wyll is arguably the most neglected companion in Baldur's Gate 3. His personal quest barely focuses on the character himself, his romance feels underdeveloped, and in terms of overall content he noticeably falls behind the others. Senior writer Kevin VanOrd, who wrote Wyll, finally explained how this happened.

“Sorry I Didn’t Give You More Time”: Baldur’s Gate 3 Writer Explains Why Wyll Got the Least Content
I wish Wyll had received more content and a richer arc. I would have loved to add a friendship system alongside romance — with its own events and dates. And I think it would have been great if characters could form relationships with each other without the player’s involvement.

The problems started back in early access: at that point, Wyll was a very different character — arrogant, morally ambiguous, with a darker edge. The team decided to rewrite him almost from scratch, turning him into a noble hero with a kind heart. Many players still miss the original version. While other companions already had established arcs, Wyll was essentially starting over — and ended up with the least content.

There’s no fixing it now: Larian has ended support for the game and shifted focus to Divinity. Wyll will remain the most underappreciated party member — and his writer, it seems, regrets it just as much as the fans.

Interestingly, VanOrd didn’t only write Wyll. In the same interview, he

also explained how he worked with Lae’zel’s writer John Corcoran to align the arcs of Shadowheart and Lae’zel — discovering they had been writing the same story from different perspectives.
