“Is the moment finally here?”: Blizzard hiring for an open-world shooter — and all signs point to a new StarCraft
Blizzard Entertainment has posted a job listing for a Lead Designer to work on an AAA open-world shooter built on Unreal Engine. The project’s name hasn’t been revealed, but the combination of indirect clues strongly points to a new game set in the StarCraft universe.
Rumors that Blizzard has been working on a StarCraft shooter have been circulating for quite some time. Journalist Jason Schreier mentioned the project in his book about Blizzard in 2024, and in January 2026 his information was backed up by Windows Central reporter Jez Corden. According to available reports, development is being led by Dan Hay — former producer of the Far Cry series at Ubisoft. The most likely venue for an announcement is BlizzCon this September.
The last entry in the series was released back in 2015 with the Legacy of the Void expansion for StarCraft II. It’s been over a decade since then — and it seems Blizzard may be preparing to bring the universe back in a completely new genre. Notably, this would also mark the studio’s first major use of Unreal Engine: nearly all previous Blizzard titles, with the exception of Hearthstone, were built on proprietary engines.
Are you excited for a new StarCraft? Or would you rather see the series return to its RTS roots? Let us know in the comments.
