The creators of Warframe: There will never be AI-generated content in our games
Digital Extremes, the studio best known for Warframe, has taken an extremely hardline stance against generative AI. In an interview with GameSpot, community director Megan Everett said that the studio’s games will never include elements created by neural networks.
We are a company that uses very little AI. Warframe and Soulframe are made entirely by people. It really frustrates me when I look at art and cannot tell whether it was made by a human or a machine... Nothing in our games will be AI-generated. Ever.
Everett admitted that she is irritated by the atmosphere of distrust surrounding modern art: when browsing a feed of illustrations, it is now impossible to tell whether you are looking at a genuine artist’s work or yet another “fake” created by an algorithm.
Digital Extremes made this statement amid an increasingly heated debate over the use of AI in games. The freshest example is Crimson Desert: in the release version of the action game, players found several pieces of art apparently generated by a neural network. After a wave of criticism, Pearl Abyss admitted that it had used AI during an early stage of development, apologized, and removed all such assets in the following patch.
On the other hand, Patrick Soderlund, founder and CEO of Embark, said that AI significantly simplifies development. According to him, The Finals and ARC Raiders were made by a small team and with a much lower budget compared to other AAA projects precisely because of neural networks.
AI allows us to improve development efficiency, use better tools, and abandon habits that no longer work. The first result of this approach was The Finals and Arc Raiders. Two games made by significantly fewer people and with much smaller budgets than other AAA titles. Our success is no accident. And now we are applying this approach to all Nexon projects.
Previously, the ARC Raiders developers shared insights into how they test the game to better understand their players.
