Metro is a series of atmospheric post-apocalyptic first-person shooters from 4A Games, based on the novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky.
All of the games are set in an alternate reality after a nuclear war, where the remnants of humanity survive in the metro — now a sprawling underground city. The series’ protagonist, Artyom, is an ordinary metro dweller who gradually finds himself caught up in events that will shape the fate of the entire surviving world.
Main games in the series:
- Metro 2033 (2010) — the beginning of the story, survival deep within the metro, and the mysterious Dark Ones.
- Metro: Last Light (2013) — the sequel, faction conflicts in the metro, and moral choices that impact the future of humanity.
- Metro Exodus (2019) — a turning point: for the first time, the heroes leave Moscow and embark on a journey across post-apocalyptic Russia aboard the “Aurora” train, with more open environments.
The Metro series is renowned for its dark, immersive atmosphere, resource scarcity, tense survival, and a story shaped by tough moral decisions.
Recently, the author of the Metro book series shared his thoughts on the new game. He noted that the story of Metro 2039 had been in his plans for a long time, but it had to “wait” until reality caught up with the idea. According to him, it no longer feels like dystopian fiction or sci-fi — on the contrary, the events and themes of the game have become frighteningly relevant and relatable to everyone today.
By the way, the franchise celebrated its 15th anniversary last year — and we put together a special feature to mark the occasion.
