Hour-Long Exploration of a Lost World: YouTuber Restores Massive Cut Dark Souls 2 Map — and Finds Surprising Details

Dark Souls 2 remains one of FromSoftware’s most divisive titles — and much of that traces back to its troubled development. Midway through production, the project underwent a full reboot: the story was rewritten, level design reworked, and a huge amount of content was left on the cutting room floor. One of the largest scrapped locations was a colossal sewer map that ultimately became The Gutter.

A YouTuber and FromSoft enthusiast known as Doneda has now restored this map and released an hour-long exploration video. He used the MapStudioBinary (MSB) format — a standard asset format used across FromSoftware games, which can be manipulated with specialized tools.

The map is enormous, partially textured, and largely interconnected — though it lacks enemies and finer details. Doneda spent nearly an hour wandering through it. Among the highlights: vast vaulted ceilings and dome-like towers with almost cathedral-like architecture, a slum-like section reminiscent of Blighttown with massive background structures, and several particularly striking locations.

  • The first is a tavern hidden within the slum area. According to Doneda, it’s “possibly the best part of the cut map” — a rare example of a space for rest in a series usually dominated by tombs, torture chambers, and poisonous swamps.
  • The second is a room resembling a boss arena: fog gates, towering statues on both sides, and a central pedestal surrounded by objects resembling swords. However, Doneda suggests these might actually be unlit candles — which would make it less of a boss arena and more of a meeting place with an important character.

The exploration also offers insight into how the game was built: near the start of the map, Doneda found a passage that doesn’t connect to anything — suggesting the designers hadn’t yet decided how players would progress.

What do you think — is Dark Souls 2 underrated, or does it deserve its reputation as the weakest in the series? Share your thoughts in the comments.
