Square Enix has released an anniversary trailer for the NieR series, marking the franchise’s 15th birthday. The video was first shown back in August 2025 at the NieR 15th Anniversary Exhibition: Unerasable Records in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, but it’s only now been made available to the public.

The celebratory trailer highlights a major milestone in the series’ history. The original game debuted in 2010, and over the years, NieR has grown from a relatively niche title into a cult phenomenon, known for its unconventional storytelling, philosophical themes, and emotional narratives. NieR: Automata, in particular, played a huge role in cementing the brand as one of the most distinctive in modern gaming.

Rather than teasing new projects, the anniversary trailer takes a retrospective approach, revisiting key moments, characters, and the unique atmosphere that has built a devoted global fanbase. Judging by the footage, there are no obvious hints about a new entry in the franchise—the focus is firmly on celebrating the series’ legacy.

For fans, it’s more of an emotional journey back to familiar motifs and visuals than an announcement of what’s next. Still, anniversary content like this often serves as a way to put the spotlight back on a franchise ahead of future developments, and interest in NieR has noticeably spiked since the trailer dropped.

Interestingly, back in April, the NieR creators jokingly claimed they were working on a space horror game based on the franchise. Someone even put together a teaser site for the project, but the developers later denied any involvement.

Given that the anniversary trailer is more of a retrospective with no clear hints at what’s next, do you think we’ll see a full announcement for a new NieR game anytime soon?
