Is Microsoft Changing the Rules? Xbox Game Pass Might Become a "Build-Your-Own" Subscription—Pay Only for What You Play
Microsoft appears to be gearing up for the next stage in subscription evolution. After recently lowering the price of Xbox Game Pass, the company is reportedly considering launching a fully customizable plan that would let users build their own subscription from the ground up.
According to insider Jez Corden, Xbox is internally discussing the concept of a “Game Pass builder.” The core idea is to give players the freedom to choose exactly what they want to pay for. For example, you could opt out of Xbox Cloud Gaming if you’re not interested in streaming, or remove extra services like Fortnite Crew. In return, you’d be able to add other options—anything from a World of Warcraft subscription to Minecraft Realms or even third-party services like Netflix.
These plans are indirectly supported by technical findings: Microsoft’s API recently revealed codenames “Duet” and “Triton,” which may hint at future service bundles within the subscription. All of this fits into the company’s broader strategy—making Game Pass as flexible and adaptable as possible for different types of players.
Analysts see the recent price cut as a logical—and perhaps overdue—move. In their view, the experiment of adding Call of Duty to Game Pass at launch didn’t deliver the expected results: it failed to drive sustained subscriber growth and likely limited revenue from traditional sales. As a result, Microsoft has moved away from that model, simultaneously lowering the subscription price to restore balance between value and accessibility.
Experts agree on one thing: making Game Pass more affordable should help grow the service’s audience in 2026, especially as everyday expenses continue to rise for consumers. However, content remains the key factor—ultimately, it’s the games themselves that will determine whether players subscribe or decide to cancel.
If the rumors about a customizable Game Pass prove true, this could be one of the most significant changes to the subscription industry in years. Such a move would effectively turn the service into a modular platform, where every player pays only for the features and content they actually use.
By the way, it was recently reported that the next-generation Xbox is being prepared to rival high-end PCs, and its price might be surprisingly competitive.
What do you think about the idea of a customizable Xbox Game Pass? Would you build your own subscription, or do you prefer the classic “all-in-one” approach?
