Sales of Road to Vostok on Steam have surpassed 250,000 copies. According to the developer, the funds will be allocated across several directions. Around 85% of the budget will go toward creating new content, about 10% will be spent on brand development, and the remaining 5% will be used for research and investments. Leinonen emphasized that the success of early access will allow Road to Vostok to remain a fully independent project without external funding.

The next update is expected in 2–3 weeks. It will include content that didn’t make it into the early access launch, as well as numerous fixes and improvements. After that, the developer will take a vacation until the end of May, but work on the game won’t stop: some tasks will be outsourced to contractors, funded by the initial sales.

By the end of Q3 2026, Leinonen plans to release a major build called Nomads. The update will introduce Nomads — a separate group of characters that players can help, build relationships with, and even invite to their shelter. A faction leader who gives out quests will also be added.

The world of Road to Vostok is set to become more dynamic and less centered around the player. Nomads will be able to engage in combat, use vehicles, and create small dynamic events. In addition, the developer plans to significantly improve the AI: military enemies will become more dangerous than ordinary bandits, factions will have distinct behavior models, and enemies will learn to patrol, react to noise, light campfires, throw grenades, and perform other actions.

The next major build will also introduce dozens of new firearms and a customization system, including folding stocks. Leinonen promises to share more details later.

Road to Vostok launched in early access on April 7, 2026. It is a single-player hardcore survival shooter set in a post-apocalyptic border zone between Finland and Russia.

By the way, we’ve previously put together a list of the best open-world games for low-end PCs and laptops in 2026.

Do you think Road to Vostok can compete with Escape from Tarkov, or is it too early to say?
