Black Flag remake updates parkour with modern Assassin’s Creed mechanics — and fans are already divided

During a closed preview of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, game director Richard Knight told GamesRadar+ how movement has evolved. In short: Edward Kenway’s parkour now builds on systems from modern entries like Assassin's Creed Shadows and Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

The parkour builds on the latest design improvements from recent Assassin’s Creed games — while preserving Edward’s classic movements.

Details are still limited: it’s unclear exactly how closely Black Flag Resynced’s movement will resemble Shadows. But the overall direction is clear — smoother, more natural traversal. Edward now transitions seamlessly between actions, whether he’s climbing across Havana’s rooftops or fighting on the docks.

Another change: Edward can now crouch at any time. It may sound minor, but it’s a meaningful addition — developers say it “opens up more tactical routes and stealth approaches” during infiltration sequences. Whether this affects the iconic ship stealth mission remains to be seen.

Naval combat is also getting an overhaul. New officers will join the crew with unique abilities, and the Jackdaw’s weapons can be upgraded with new firing modes. The sea itself plays a bigger role now: weather and waves directly impact ship handling.

Fan reaction is mixed. Some are glad the remake goes beyond a simple visual upgrade. Others are cautious: too much influence from Valhalla or Shadows risks losing the identity of the original Black Flag. As Richard Knight assures, staying faithful to the source remains the top priority. We’ll find out how true that is on July 9.
