PS5 and PS4 may have a security feature that blocks games without an internet connection. Access will be removed in just one month
It seems that the PS4 and PS5 requirement for an internet connection to play games was not a mistake. A Sony support response has gained popularity on the internet, claiming that this is a new rule.
Last week, many Sony console owners noticed that digital copies of games purchased after March 2026 started showing a timer with the license expiration date. In other words, all newly purchased titles on PS4 and PS5 require an internet connection once every 30 days. If you do not go online during this time, the game will be blocked until the next connection to the PlayStation Network.
Games that were purchased before the March update are not subject to the restriction yet. However, the players were still outraged by Sony's decision. At a minimum, this may affect consoles that are located in places with poor Internet access, for example, in the country. Many recalled a similar move from Microsoft in 2013, when Xbox One provided a mandatory online check every 24 hours.
The optimistic users assumed after the timer appeared that it was a mistake. However, technical support confirmed to one of the players that if the console does not connect to the Internet within 30 days, the license expires, and the game may refuse to launch until the connection is restored.
However, the technical support response is the only thing that users have so far. There has been no official statement from Sony, so there remains hope that the company's decision will change.
PlayStation also continues to actively poach Xbox exclusives. Recently it became known that Forza Horizon 5 has become extremely successful on PS5. The developers from Virtuos Studio have confirmed that the game has sold five million copies on Sony's console.
