A New Platform for Creating Your Own Source 2 Games Launches on Steam — Being Compared to Garry’s Mod

A spiritual successor to Garry's Mod called s&box has just launched on Steam. The project is described as a platform for creating games using the Source 2 engine. It’s developed by Facepunch Studios, the team behind Garry’s Mod and Rust.

“Play, create, and share games, explore community creations, and enjoy endless sandbox fun with powerful modern tools,” reads the official description.

s&box brings together a library of community-made projects and development tools, allowing users to both play and create their own games.

The platform already offers hundreds of user-made projects across various genres — from shooters and horror games to experimental formats — all of which can be launched instantly without installation or complicated server setup.

At its core is the modern Source 2 engine, delivering advanced graphics and physics. The built-in editor supports C# and hot-reloading, making it easy to quickly create and test content.

s&box supports multiplayer with quick session joining, a unified character customization system, and regular updates. There’s also a Play Fund monetization system, allowing creators to earn revenue based on player activity, and there are plans to let users publish their games as standalone titles on Steam without licensing fees.

At the time of writing, s&box holds a 71% rating.

Meanwhile, a new Steam sale is underway, and a list of the most anticipated games of May has just been released.

Do you think s&box can become a worthy successor to Garry’s Mod, or will the original remain unrivaled?
