Phasmophobia is set to receive one of its biggest updates yet on May 5, 2026. The developers at Kinetic Games have revealed details of the Player Character Update, which will completely overhaul characters and introduce the long-awaited customization features.

The highlight of the update is a full character editor: a new shop in the lobby will let players choose from 12 different characters and customize their appearance—from hairstyles and hair color to outfits, accessories, and more. All cosmetic items will be available without microtransactions; players can unlock them through challenges or purchase them with in-game currency.

The update isn’t just about looks—character models themselves have been revamped. The developers have reworked animations and movement to make them more realistic, including replacing the iconic “broken” walk that became a meme among players. Death and revival animations have also been updated, interactions with the environment and equipment have been improved, and the infamous “death room” is being removed from the game.

Additionally, the patch will introduce new cosmetic rewards for event participants, including items from the Cursed Hollow event, as well as Twitch Drops available during the first days after release.

News of the update comes after the announcement of a crossover with Alan Wake 2 and confirmation that a Phasmophobia film adaptation is in the works from Blumhouse Productions. All of this fits into the game’s 2026 development roadmap, with the Player Character Update serving as the first major step toward version 1.0. The update will launch simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

What do you think about the upcoming customization in Phasmophobia—will you spend time perfecting your character’s look, or is your main goal just to avoid being caught by the ghost?
