Sony has explained the 30-day timer on PS5 and PS4 — PlayStation's comment on blocking games without internet
The discussion continues on the Internet about the mandatory connection of the PS5 and PS4 to the Internet, without which access to games will disappear in a month. It seems that now an end can be put to this issue, because PlayStation officially broke its silence for the first time, commenting on the situation to journalists, IGM writes.
In its message, Sony confirmed that a one-time verification will be required to confirm the license, but otherwise the players will not encounter any problems.
«Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required to confirm the game's license, after which no further check-ins are required».
IGM notes that the innovation actually turned out to be not very serious. Sony may need it to reduce refund abuse.
«Ultimately, it doesn’t seem like this will cause too many headaches. Most players are already connected online, and when they purchase/download a digital game, they need to be connected to the internet anyway».
The situation began to be discussed last week, when some Sony console owners reported that digital copies of games purchased after March 2026 began to show a strange timer. Many people understood it this way: all newly purchased titles on PS4 and PS5 require an Internet connection once every 30 days. If you do not go online during this time, the game will be blocked until the next connection to the PlayStation Network.
Later, a theory emerged that explained the situation by combating money-back abuse. In theory, the owner of the hacked console could have bought the game, accessed it, and then disconnected the device from the network and issued a refund according to the standard procedure, while still being able to play offline.
