First-Person or Third-Person? Resident Evil Requiem Players Are More Divided Than Expected

Resident Evil Requiem game director Koshi Nakanishi has revealed new insights into how players are actually choosing their camera perspective in different parts of the game — and the stats vary more than you might think depending on the character and platform.
According to the developers, most players stick closely to the recommended settings during Leon’s missions. Around 90% of users prefer to play his segments in the classic third-person mode, which is largely explained by fans being used to this viewpoint from previous entries in the series.
Things look very different, however, in Grace’s episodes. Here, the split is much more pronounced: about 60% of players follow the suggestion to use first-person, while roughly 40% switch to third-person, lowering the tension and making the horror feel less immersive.
Interestingly, preferences differ significantly depending on region and platform. Players in Japan and other Asian countries tend to favor third-person, while on PC, the share of users choosing first-person is noticeably higher than on consoles.
Nakanishi also reminded fans that the ability to freely switch camera perspectives was an intentional design choice. After the experience of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, the team realized that a fixed first-person view could be too intense for some players. With Requiem, the developers wanted to give players flexibility: if first-person horror feels overwhelming, you can always switch to the more “detached” third-person perspective.
Resident Evil Requiem, which launched in February, has already surpassed 7 million copies sold in its first two months and remains one of the highest-rated games of the year. In our review, we broke down the game’s biggest strengths and weaknesses.
How do you usually play Resident Evil — do you choose first-person for a more immersive horror experience, or stick with third-person for better control and less tension?
