Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Will Let You Literally Level Enemy Cover — New Game Features Revealed

Creative Assembly has unveiled new details about Total War: Warhammer 40,000, highlighting one of its standout features: large-scale, dynamic environment destruction, which the developers call “the biggest mental shift” for the series in years.

Unlike previous Total War games, where landscape and structures mostly acted as static tactical obstacles, the new entry will allow players to destroy a significant portion of cover and objects right in the heat of battle. According to the devs, this isn’t just about decorative elements—forests, buildings, and entire map sections become true instruments of war. Instead of maneuvering around a fortified enemy position, for example, you can simply obliterate it with artillery or an orbital strike.

The team is quick to point out that destruction won’t be absolute. The mechanic is implemented selectively—only where it deepens tactical gameplay and doesn’t break the balance. This approach is meant to keep the battlefield readable and prevent every fight from devolving into chaotic scorched-earth brawls.

Developers note that this new system fundamentally changes the logic of combat. Where dense terrain or natural features once shaped the flow of battle, players can now “rewrite” the map to suit their own style. This is especially important in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where powerful but mostly linear weapons—from bolters to heavy artillery—are the norm. In this context, cover becomes critical, and destroying it is just as important a tactical choice.

Verticality also gets special attention: units can occupy ruins and high ground for firing advantages, but risk being buried if the enemy brings down the structure. In drawn-out firefights, players will have to constantly weigh their options—whether to use assault squads with jump packs or pinpoint strikes to flush out enemies entrenched behind buildings.

The scale of battles is also ramping up. The campaign will unfold on a galactic level: players will manage fleets, conquer planets, and fight across diverse biomes—from desert worlds to massive hive cities. Each star system will include several planets, and the maps themselves will range from open fields to dense industrial zones with narrow chokepoints and multiple control points.

At launch, four factions are confirmed: Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Astra Militarum, each with unique mechanics and playstyles. The devs promise that differences will go beyond just units—expect entirely different strategic approaches, from elite, small-scale armies to massive offensives focused on firepower and machinery.

Despite the scale of what’s being shown, there’s no exact release date yet. All we know is that Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will launch on PC and current-gen consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S). From what’s been revealed, this new installment isn’t just about bringing the Total War formula to the Warhammer 40,000 setting—it’s about reimagining it, especially through the ability to literally reshape the battlefield mid-fight. The project was announced last December. We’ve previously gathered all the details in a separate article.
