Onimusha: Way of the Sword gets a story trailer at State of Play
Capcom showed a new story trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword during today’s State of Play. The series, which hasn’t had a new main entry since 2006, is returning in full force: the story takes place in Edo-period Kyoto, consumed by “Malice” — a supernatural darkness from which demons emerge. The protagonist is the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.
The game runs on the RE Engine — the same technology Capcom used for Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Pragmata. In short: the engine behind most of the company’s recent hits. Producer Akihito Kadowaki previously said that Capcom had been assembling the team for a new Onimusha internally since 2020 — there was plenty of interest, but the resources weren’t available to start the project earlier.
The release is set for September 25, 2026. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The surrounding release window is looking packed: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives in October, followed by GTA 6 in November. Capcom will also release a demo for the game.
