Setone Games, a Russian indie studio, has officially announced Mother Zina, a first-person psychological horror thriller unfolding in the post-Soviet landscape. The game already has a Steam page, where players can add it to their wishlist.

In Mother Zina, players take on the role of a foreign journalist who travels to a small southern Russian town to report on everyday life. Renting an apartment from the enigmatic Zinaida Petrovna in a crumbling panel building, the protagonist soon finds himself drawn into a supernatural nightmare.

What begins as a routine assignment quickly spirals into horror as people start to disappear, and all evidence seems to point back to the mysterious landlady. Players will explore various locations, collect items, notes, and audio recordings, and solve story-driven puzzles as they try to unravel the truth.

Gameplay promises a mix of quest rooms, jump scares, chases, and psychedelic mini-games, all designed to heighten the tension. The developers are aiming for a 2007-inspired aesthetic and an atmosphere of paranoia, with a constant sense that someone — or something — is always watching.

Setone Games has not yet announced a release date for Mother Zina, but the game’s unique approach to supernatural horror in rural Russia is already drawing attention.

Does the perspective of a foreign journalist and the eerie mysteries of provincial Russia make Mother Zina’s setting more intriguing — or more unsettling — for you?
