Gothic 1 Remake, which launched today (June 5), has already received its first critic scores and user reviews. At the time of writing, the game holds an 85% positive rating on Steam, indicating that most players have responded favorably to the remake so far.

For me, the Gothic Remake is the ultimate gaming highlight of 2026—the refinement of a classic and a sheer delight for action-RPG fans! Only technical flaws and a somewhat overly deferential adherence to the source material detract from this fan dream come true.
Gothic Remake is a fantastic, atmospheric reimagining that more than does justice to the original.
Gothic 1 Remake may have made concessions for new players, but remains an RPG for people who think Daggerfall was the last good Bethesda game.
If you want that old Gothic feeling and gameplay – and make sure you do! –, then by all means, buy this. For everyone else, I have a list of over 50 RPGs from the last 10 years that all stand in some way on the shoulder of this ancient giant. And they are all way better games.

Gothic 1 Remake is a modern reimagining of the iconic 2001 RPG, preserving the atmosphere and core ideas of the original. Players return to the open-world Valley of Mines, where every decision can influence the course of events. The remake features a vast world filled with dynamic NPCs, a branching storyline with three joinable factions, an overhauled combat system, expanded quests, and enhanced visuals. As the Nameless Hero, players must survive among dangerous creatures, rival camps, and ancient mysteries while gradually shaping the fate of the entire colony.
