During the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, 4A Games unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Metro 2039, the next entry in the post-apocalyptic shooter series. The developers also confirmed that the game is set to launch in February 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Metro 2039 takes place in the dark tunnels of the Moscow Metro 25 years after the nuclear apocalypse. Following years of infighting, the surviving factions have been united under the rule of Hunter, a fanatical Spartan who established the New Reich — an authoritarian regime that keeps the population under control through fear and propaganda.
Players will step into the shoes of a mysterious Wanderer, a recluse living far from civilization who is haunted by disturbing visions of the past. When the ghosts of long-forgotten events force him to leave his refuge, he embarks on a dangerous journey across the ruins of Moscow, facing new threats and uncovering secrets that could change the fate of the entire Metro.
According to 4A Games, Metro 2039 will feature the largest and darkest story in the franchise to date, combining the series’ signature elements: exploration, survival mechanics, intense gunfights, stealth gameplay, and a deeply immersive post-apocalyptic atmosphere. The trailer showcases both the familiar underground tunnels and vast surface areas filled with deadly dangers.
