A new trailer for the upcoming action RPG Kingdom Hearts 4 was shown during Nintendo Direct. The game is in development not only for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, but also for Nintendo Switch 2.

The story of Kingdom Hearts 4 takes place after the endings of Kingdom Hearts 3 and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. Series protagonist Sora finds himself trapped in the mysterious world of Quadratum — a realistic metropolis inspired by modern-day Tokyo. Meanwhile, Donald Duck and Goofy set out to find a way to bring their friend back home.

The new entry will mark the beginning of the Lost Master arc. According to the developers, Quadratum will serve as the central hub, allowing players to travel to other worlds, including locations based on various Disney universes.

In terms of gameplay, Kingdom Hearts 4 will retain the series’ signature Keyblade-based combat. Parkour and weapon transformations will return, while the Keyblade itself can be used as a kind of grappling hook for quickly moving through large locations. The developers are also preparing the return of reaction commands in the spirit of Kingdom Hearts 2, along with a new mechanic.

Alongside Sora, the game will feature Donald Duck, Goofy, Mickey Mouse, and Strelitzia — a Keyblade wielder familiar to fans from Kingdom Hearts Union χ. The developers also promise to put more focus on Sora’s everyday life and his stay in Quadratum.

By the way, we previously published a list of the best RPGs on PC and consoles. The Kingdom Hearts series made the cut as well.
