One of the Highest-Rated Games of All Time Is Getting a Remake — The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Returns

During the June Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo officially unveiled a remake of the legendary The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The updated version of one of the most influential and critically acclaimed games in industry history is set to launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
The debut trailer was entirely cinematic and featured no gameplay footage. Instead, it offered a glimpse of a young Link, a mysterious forest, and several recognizable elements from the original story. Nintendo also confirmed that more details about the project will be revealed later this year.
Rumors about an Ocarina of Time remake began circulating earlier in 2026. One of the first people to report on the project was well-known insider Nate the Hate, who had previously revealed the existence of a new Star Fox game long before its official announcement. Following today's showcase, those reports have now been confirmed.
Originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely regarded as one of the most important video games ever made. It was the first fully 3D entry in the Zelda series and laid the groundwork for many gameplay mechanics that would later influence not only future Zelda titles but countless modern action-adventure games as well. Its legacy can still be seen in acclaimed entries such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Over the years, the game has received several re-releases, but many fans still consider the 2011 Nintendo 3DS version to be the definitive edition. That release introduced improved visuals, interface refinements, and a variety of quality-of-life improvements, including adjustments to the infamous and notoriously challenging Water Temple.
Based on the trailer, the new remake will feature completely rebuilt visuals. The art direction appears to move away from the painterly style of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom in favor of a more realistic look for both characters and environments.
Nintendo has yet to reveal details regarding gameplay changes, the scope of the remake, or any new features. For now, the company has only confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake will launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
Meanwhile, a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is also currently in development and is scheduled to premiere on April 30, 2027. Filming has already wrapped.
