Final Fantasy Resonance Announced as First HD-2D Mainline Entry, Launches October 2026
Turn-based combat gets a new twist in Final Fantasy Resonance: a Visions system lets party members equip legendary heroes to unlock jobs, skills and powerful team attacks.
Blending classic pixel art with modern lighting, particle effects and dynamic camera work, Resonance reimagines how early Final Fantasy titles might have evolved in a two-dimensional format. Square Enix says the game draws inspiration from the first season of the mobile RPG Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius but is neither a direct remake nor a port — it uses familiar characters and themes as the foundation for new storylines, a reimagined world and exclusive content. It launches October 22, 2026, on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Players follow Rain, a royal knight, and his companions as they investigate a dangerous force threatening their world. The narrative leans on classic series elements — crystals, airships, moogles and continent-spanning travel — while adding original threads and expanded character arcs.
Combat remains turn-based, emphasizing the exploitation of enemy weaknesses to break defenses and trigger powerful resonance attacks. The Visions system lets characters borrow skills and jobs from legendary series heroes — including Warrior of Light, Terra, Cloud, Zidane, Shantotto and Y'shtola — and also ties into esper summoning. (Espers are summonable guardians that provide powerful attacks and support.) Other features listed by the developers include a world map with chocobo and airship travel, optional dungeons and a wealth of secrets to uncover.
The soundtrack blends music from Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius with 33 newly composed tracks for Resonance. Players can also expect dramatic cutscenes, voiced characters and strategic battles that pay homage to the golden era of Japanese RPGs.
In related news, Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, the concluding chapter of the ambitious remake trilogy, was recently announced. We've also previously put together a list of the best tactical games on PC and consoles.
Does the HD-2D style and crossover of classic heroes make you more likely to try Final Fantasy Resonance, or do you prefer the modern 3D entries in the series?
