God of War: Laufey Was in the Works Since 2018

God of War Laufey, the next major entry in the acclaimed action series, has been in development since at least 2018, with Santa Monica Studio planning the project even before the release of God of War (2018).

Lead actress Deborah Ann Woll revealed that creative director Cory Barlog showed her a poster for the new game years ago, highlighting the studio's long-term vision for the franchise.

Unlike previous entries, God of War: Laufey will let players experience the Norse saga from the perspective of Laufey, Kratos' wife, as the main playable character. The story will unfold in parallel to the events of God of War (2018), offering a fresh angle on the established mythology. Santa Monica Studio emphasizes that this is not a replacement for Kratos' story — the classic saga will continue alongside new entries, with Laufey serving as an expansion of the universe rather than a reboot.

The studio aims to use Laufey to answer lingering questions and expand on the mysteries left by the Norse storyline. According to Woll, the game will delve deeper into the mythology, addressing fan theories and unexplored elements from previous titles.
