Hideo Kojima Unveils New Details and Screenshot for OD, His Boldest Horror Game Yet
Hideo Kojima has revealed new details and a fresh screenshot for OD, his upcoming single-player horror game created in collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele. The project, which aims to deliver a "new type of horror," features Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and the late Udo Kier in leading roles. Kier was scanned for the game before his passing in November 2025, ensuring his digital likeness will appear in the final release.
OD is designed to push the boundaries of fear in gaming, with Kojima striving to create an experience that goes beyond what previous horror titles have achieved. The concept centers on the idea of an "overdose of fear," and Kojima has implemented a secret gameplay mechanic that allows players to continue even if the terror becomes overwhelming. However, the specifics of this system remain under wraps.
I wanted to go beyond the limit of the "scariness" that other games had reached. It's a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible. But for those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going. I can't say much more, because it'll give too much of a hint on the system, and I could get in trouble for saying too much!
The idea for OD first emerged during Kojima's work on the original Death Stranding. Despite the intriguing premise, several major game companies initially dismissed the project as "crazy" or unfeasible. It was only with the support of then-Xbox CEO Phil Spencer and current Xbox head Asha Sharma that Kojima was granted full creative freedom to pursue his vision. OD is being developed in partnership with Microsoft, though no release date or platforms have been announced as of June 2026.
Filming and motion capture are currently underway, with the main cast actively involved in production. The extent of Udo Kier's role in the finished game has not been disclosed, leaving fans to speculate about his character's significance.
A newly released screenshot teases the game's unsettling atmosphere, depicting a mysterious corridor with a woman in red and a television displaying Sophia Lillis's face. This image underscores the project's focus on tension and the unknown.
The use of Udo Kier's digital likeness after his death raises important ethical questions for the industry. Do you see this as a groundbreaking step for storytelling in games, or does it cross a line?
