GTA 6 Won't Include a Disc in the Box — Physical Edition Comes With a Download Code Only
Rockstar Games has revealed new details about the physical editions of Grand Theft Auto 6. As it turns out, players who purchase a boxed copy of the game won't receive a physical disc. Instead, the package will contain a code that can be redeemed for a digital download.
To ensure physical edition buyers aren't at a disadvantage compared to those who purchase the game digitally, Rockstar is taking an unusual approach. Boxed copies of GTA 6 will begin shipping on November 12, a full week before the game's official launch on November 19. This will allow players to redeem their code and preload the game at the same time as digital pre-order customers.
Preloading will also go live on November 12.
The decision is likely to disappoint collectors who were hoping to add a physical copy of GTA 6 to their shelves. However, many players believe Rockstar's move may be tied to the game's massive install size.
Modern PlayStation 5 Blu-ray discs can store up to 100 GB of data, yet several recent AAA releases have already required multiple discs. For example, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth shipped on two discs for PS5, while Baldur's Gate 3 is distributed across four discs on Xbox Series X/S.
As a result, some fans speculate that GTA 6 could exceed 200 GB in size. If that's the case, a physical release would likely require multiple discs on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, increasing manufacturing costs and creating additional packaging challenges.
Although physical game sales have been declining for years, boxed copies still account for a significant share of purchases on PlayStation platforms. That is especially true for blockbuster releases like GTA 6, which many fans prefer to own in physical form.
If confirmed, GTA 6 will become one of the biggest game releases in recent memory to effectively abandon traditional game discs, even in its physical edition.
Pre-orders for GTA 6 have already gone live in New Zealand. Rockstar has also revealed new details about the game's Ultimate Edition, which is priced at $100.
