Meccha Chameleon Sells 10 Million Copies in 16 Days: Viral Indie Party Game Takes Steam by Storm

Aleksandr Manin

MECCHA CHAMELEON, developed by just two Japanese creators, has become a viral sensation by selling 10 million copies in only 16 days on Steam — despite having no marketing budget. The game, made by Lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro, launched on June 10, 2026, and is available now on Steam.

In this inventive party game, players are divided into "chameleons" and "hunters." Chameleons paint and rotate their white figures to blend seamlessly into the environment, disguising themselves as signs, furniture, or even parts of paintings, while hunters race to spot every hidden player before time runs out. The gameplay draws inspiration from hide-and-seek modes in Fortnite, but adds a unique camouflage mechanic that has proven irresistible for streamers and group play. Viral clips and memes of the most creative disguises have rapidly spread across Twitch and social media, propelling the game's popularity.

The pace of sales has been extraordinary. Meccha Chameleon reached 5 million copies in just 10 days, then quickly climbed to 7 million, and now stands at 10 million sold. At its peak, the game boasted over 340,000 concurrent players, briefly surpassing even Steam's top five most-played titles. For context, major releases like Resident Evil Requiem and Crimson Desert took months to achieve similar numbers, while this indie title accomplished it in a matter of weeks.

Even during the height of the Steam summer sale — when blockbuster games were discounted by up to 90% — Meccha Chameleon held its $5.99 price and still topped the charts. With a standard price of $6 per copy, gross sales reached $60 million in just over two weeks. The achievement is even more remarkable considering the game was developed in only two months using Unreal Engine 5: Lemorion_1224 handled maps, models, visuals, and publishing, while Haganeiro built the core systems, gameplay logic, and networking.

The developers are already rolling out updates with new maps and have promised to keep adding content as long as the community remains active. Meccha Chameleon's runaway success highlights how fresh ideas and viral momentum can still break through in a market dominated by big-budget releases.
