Follow-up: Sony’s Decision to Abandon Physical Discs Sparks Backlash from Gamers and Industry Figures

Sony has announced that it will phase out physical game discs for new PlayStation releases. Beginning in January 2028, the company will stop producing disc-based editions for both first-party titles and games from third-party publishers. After that date, all new PlayStation game releases will be distributed exclusively in digital form.

According to a statement from Sony Interactive Entertainment, the decision reflects changing consumer preferences and broader trends across the entertainment industry. The company noted that demand for digital game purchases has already surpassed interest in physical media by a significant margin, making the transition to a fully digital model a logical next step.

Based on the information released, the change will only affect games launching after January 2028. Titles that were previously released on disc, as well as games scheduled to launch before that date, will continue to be available in physical format. Players who already own disc-based copies will not face any restrictions.

Sony believes that moving away from physical media will allow the company to allocate resources more efficiently and focus on expanding the PlayStation digital ecosystem. The company also emphasized that players will still be able to purchase games through the PlayStation Store and retail partners, although future releases will be distributed exclusively as digital downloads or redemption codes.

The announcement has sparked considerable debate among gamers. For many collectors and fans of physical editions, the news marks a disappointing turning point, as boxed games have long been a core part of gaming culture. Supporters of digital distribution, however, point to the convenience of instant downloads and the lack of need to store physical collections.

The news has also reignited speculation surrounding PlayStation 6. If Sony's next-generation console launches in 2028 as many analysts expect, some believe the company could fully embrace a digital-only approach or offer an optional detachable disc drive similar to the one available for the revised PlayStation 5. Sony has not officially revealed any details about its next console.

In many ways, Sony's decision signals the beginning of the end for physical PlayStation game releases. While discs will remain on store shelves for several more years, starting in 2028 all new games for the platform will be released exclusively in digital form—potentially marking one of the most significant shifts in PlayStation's history.

Sony is also reportedly planning to return to a stronger focus on console exclusives. That strategy was recently criticized by former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden, who argued that limiting releases could hurt the brand's long-term growth.

What do you think about Sony's decision to abandon physical game discs? Have you already gone fully digital, or do you still prefer collecting physical editions?
