Sony Is Ending PlayStation Store Support for PS3 and PS Vita After Nearly 20 Years
Sony has announced the upcoming closure of the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. The company confirmed that the digital storefronts on both platforms will be phased out throughout 2026 and 2027, bringing nearly two decades of support to an end.
According to an official statement from Sony Interactive Entertainment, players will no longer be able to purchase new games, DLC, or other digital content through the PS3 and PS Vita stores once they are shut down. However, users will still be able to re-download previously purchased content after the closures.
Sony explained that the decision was driven by the technical limitations of the aging hardware. The company noted that the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to meet modern digital commerce standards, including updated payment processing and security requirements. According to Sony, the architecture of the PS3 and PS Vita can no longer support these changes at the level required, making continued operation of the storefronts impractical.
For most countries, the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will shut down in July 2027. However, some regions will lose access sooner. In Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, the PS3 storefront will close in August 2026. Meanwhile, additional countries across Latin America and the Middle East will see PS3 store closures begin before the end of 2026.
Sony also confirmed that it has no plans to discontinue the PlayStation Store on PS4. Despite its age, the console continues to receive new releases and remains one of the most popular platforms within the PlayStation ecosystem.
The announcement comes shortly after reports that Sony plans to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in 2028. Both decisions reflect the company's broader strategy of investing in modern digital infrastructure while gradually phasing out support for legacy services. Sony is also reportedly looking to strengthen its focus on traditional console exclusives.
For PS3 and PS Vita owners, the news serves as another reminder that an era is coming to a close. While access to previously purchased games will remain intact, the ability to buy new content on these platforms will soon become a thing of the past.
