Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it will discontinue production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles starting January 2028. This sweeping policy affects both PlayStation Studios releases and third-party games, marking a major shift in how PlayStation content will be distributed.

Beginning in January 2028, all new PlayStation games will be available exclusively in digital format — either through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes sold by retail partners. Physical discs will no longer be produced for new releases, though games that launched or were announced before this cutoff will still be sold on disc as before.

Sony cites a dramatic change in consumer habits as the reason for this decision. According to the company, about 85% of full game purchases for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are now digital. This trend has accelerated in recent years, prompting Sony to adapt its distribution model to match player preferences. The company previously found success with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, a disc-free console that proved popular among buyers.

Retailers will continue to offer boxed versions of new games, but these packages will only contain download codes instead of discs. Grand Theft Auto 6 will be the first major PlayStation release to use this approach, being sold at retail as a code in a box rather than on a physical disc. This change is expected to significantly impact the second-hand market, as digital codes cannot be resold or traded once redeemed.

The announcement has sparked considerable debate among gamers and industry figures, with concerns about game preservation, ownership rights, and the future of physical collections. The shift also reflects broader industry trends, such as Nintendo's move toward game-key cards for Switch 2 and the growing dominance of digital storefronts. Meanwhile, the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita is set to close in July 2027 in most countries, further signaling the end of an era for both physical and legacy digital content.

With Sony becoming the first major platform holder to fully phase out physical discs, questions remain about the long-term effects on game ownership, resale rights, and the preservation of gaming history. Will this move accelerate the rise of digital monopolies and limit player control over their collections?
