PlayStation Fans Are Voting With Their Wallets — Calls to Cancel PS Plus Gain Momentum Online

A growing online campaign is pushing back against PlayStation's move away from physical media. Following Sony's recent announcement that it will stop releasing physical versions of new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, some users have begun cancelling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions in protest.

Across forums, social media platforms, and especially X, players are encouraging others to "vote with their wallets" by unsubscribing from the service as a way to express dissatisfaction with Sony's shift toward an all-digital future. Some users have even shared screenshots showing canceled subscriptions and disabled auto-renewal settings, urging more PlayStation owners to join the movement.

One of the most visible voices behind the campaign is X user Pyo, who posted step-by-step instructions on how to cancel PS Plus along with a warning: "Speak up today or lose ownership forever!"

Much of the backlash stems from concerns over digital ownership. Many players point to a recent incident in which hundreds of movies disappeared from Sony users' digital libraries after licensing agreements expired. For some gamers, that raises an obvious question: what's stopping the same thing from happening to digitally purchased video games?

Similar situations have occurred before. Digital versions of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, and Deadpool were removed from storefronts after Activision's Marvel licensing agreement expired. Today, the only way to obtain those games is through physical copies or the second-hand market.

Supporters of physical media are also concerned about the future of used game sales. Being able to buy and sell disc-based games helps many players keep gaming affordable, while digital storefronts often offer higher prices and provide no resale options.

Whether this wave of PS Plus cancellations will have any impact on Sony's plans remains to be seen. However, the future of physical media has become one of the hottest topics among PlayStation fans in recent days, and frustration within parts of the community continues to grow.

Incidentally, it was recently reported that Sony is preparing another PlayStation Plus price increase despite posting record profits.

How do you feel about gaming's all-digital future? Are you ready to give up physical discs, or do you still see physical editions as an important part of the industry?
