Escape the Backrooms Launches Unexpectedly on Nintendo Switch 2 With Full Cross-Play

Escape the Backrooms, the cooperative horror game from publisher Secret Mode and developer Fancy Games, launched unexpectedly on Nintendo Switch 2 on July 7, 2026. Available as a digital download for $12.99, it supports full cross-play with PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, enabling Switch 2 players to join friends across all platforms.

Up to four players can team up to survive and escape through more than 30 unique levels, each inspired by the unsettling lore of the backrooms. Forming parties is quick and easy thanks to a cross-platform lobby code system that works across all supported devices.

A standout feature is proximity voice chat, which allows teammates to communicate but also lets hostile entities in the game hear players' conversations. This mechanic increases tension, as careless talk can attract dangerous in-game threats.

For those seeking a tougher experience, Nightmare Mode requires the entire group to restart a level if any team member dies. Meta-progression systems are also included, encouraging players to return for multiple sessions.

The game continues to receive regular content updates, adding new levels and gameplay improvements. Since its console debut on Xbox and PlayStation in late May, Escape the Backrooms has surpassed four million players, highlighting its rapidly growing popularity.

It was previously reported that Escape the Backrooms topped the PlayStation 5 download charts for the month of June, even managing to outperform Call of Duty.
