Hands-On Previews Say The Blood of Dawnwalker Is a Witcher-Like RPG With a Time Twist

The Blood of Dawnwalker has drawn a wave of hands-on previews, and one detail keeps coming up: Rebel Wolves is using a strict 30-day countdown to frame Coen's mission. Previewers say the debut RPG also feels close to The Witcher in its quest design, investigation, and narrative tone, but with a vampire twist layered on top.

The story takes place in a fictional 14th-century kingdom called Vale Sangora, where vampire lord Brencis rules through fear and a blood tax. Coen is turned into a Dawnwalker, meaning he lives as a human by day and gains vampiric powers at night. That split also shapes the combat: daytime fights rely on swordplay, directional attacks, and parries, while the night side adds claws, shadowstep, and blood feeding.

The time system is the other big hook. In Rebel Wolves' setup, time only moves forward when players complete quests, side activities, or upgrades, so exploration itself does not burn through the clock. Even so, Coen still has just 30 days and nights to stop Brencis' coronation ritual and save his family — and if the deadline is missed, the story does not end, but the consequences get much harsher.

That structure can also shut doors in unexpected ways. Previewers said quests and outcomes can change across playthroughs, including who lives or dies during the blood ritual, and some players saw drastically different content from others. Rebel Wolves also said some people in the studio needed 50 to 70 hours to finish the game, with a single playthrough covering around 60 to 70 percent of the available content.

When we're looking for people to play in the studio, like our studio head or guys from marketing, and so on, it took them between 50-70 hours to finish the game.

The studio has also emphasized the vampire side of Coen's design. Patryk Fijalkowski said the team wanted to evoke the feeling of being a vampire, including the craving that comes with it. If Coen's night-time health drops too low, he can lose control and feed on the nearest human — even an ally — which makes the bloodlust mechanic a real risk, not just a power-up.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is planned for release on September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The standard edition is priced at $69.99, and the game is published by Bandai Namco.

Does the 30-day clock make The Blood of Dawnwalker more exciting, or too punishing for an RPG?
