DOOM: The Dark Ages Director Dismisses id Software Bloodbath Rumors

Aleksandr Manin

Hugo Martin, creative director of DOOM: The Dark Ages, pushed back on rumors that id Software had been gutted, saying the studio is still intact and that what matters most is that the games are good. He made the comments during a Slayers Club Live livestream focused on DOOM: The Dark Ages — Revelations DLC.

Martin said reports claiming the studio had been "nerfed into the ground" or left with just 50 people were not true. He added that id Software is the same size it was when it made DOOM 2016.

The creative director also addressed id Tech, saying the engine is still "very much alive and well." According to Martin, id Tech engineers are working both in Frankfurt and at MachineGames, and the two teams collaborate closely.

Martin said id Software will share more about future projects when it is appropriate and approved. He also described DOOM: The Dark Ages as a game that has been critically and commercially successful and said it is doing very well relative to forecasts.

He ended the discussion by returning to the same point: "What matters the most is that the games are good." That was the clearest takeaway from the livestream, along with Martin's message that id Software and id Tech remain in solid shape.

Do Martin's comments settle the rumors around id Software, or do you think more context is still needed?
