Bethesda says The Elder Scrolls VI is its top priority, while Fallout 5 is still in preproduction
Bethesda Game Studios said Todd Howard and the team are already playing The Elder Scrolls VI every day and are happy with how it looks, while Fallout 5 remains only in preproduction. In a new studio note, Howard also made clear that the long-awaited RPG is now Bethesda's main development focus.
Howard did not offer a platform breakdown for either RPG, but Bethesda did spell out where the projects stand internally. The studio said the majority of its team is currently working on The Elder Scrolls VI, while Fallout 5 remains its long-range destination.
Bethesda also said both games are being developed on Creation Engine 3. That same note added that the company is working with Obsidian Entertainment on a new Fallout project and with ZeniMax Online Studios on The Elder Scrolls franchise.
The Fallout side of the update is broader than just Fallout 5. Bethesda confirmed that remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development, and it also said a new Fallout 76 expansion called Raven Rock is coming in 2027. The expansion is described as a prequel story to Fallout 3.
For now, though, the clearest takeaway is that Bethesda is putting its biggest energy into The Elder Scrolls VI. Fallout 5 exists, but it is still far down the road — and the studio itself is not pretending otherwise.
Does Bethesda's clear focus on The Elder Scrolls VI make Fallout 5's long wait more frustrating?
