Jason Schreier Says Xbox May Stop Adding New Games to Game Pass on Day One
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier says the internal backlash around Game Pass is strong enough that Xbox could eventually rethink how it uses the service, including a move away from putting new releases on day one.
Schreier said many people in Xbox studio leadership "absolutely detest" Game Pass and believe it has destroyed the value of their games. He added that some developers see adding expensive new releases to the service as harmful to the wider industry because it devalues games. In his view, one possible long-term outcome is a split model in which Game Pass keeps older or smaller games while bigger releases are sold the traditional way. At the same time, GameMAG reported that Asha Sharma is not abandoning Xbox Game Pass development, even though Xbox has already removed the new Call of Duty from the subscription.
Schreier also said developers working on games scheduled for release over the next year may be worried about losing their jobs after those projects ship.
there are a lot of people out there in studio leadership within xbox who absolutely detest game pass and think it has destroyed the value of their games, think it has taken away the value from all games in general and has been a detriment to the games industry in those people's view, because of how it devalues games
Previously, a list of games coming to Game Pass through the end of July was revealed.
