GTA 5 unexpectedly runs on Nintendo Switch as enthusiast showcases major progress on unofficial port
Mosjo, the enthusiast behind an unofficial Nintendo Switch port of GTA 5, has revealed that the project has now made it past the prologue and no longer gets stuck at the main menu. Even more impressively, the game is running on a modded Nintendo Switch OLED rather than through emulation, making the current state of the port far more promising than many expected.
Mosjo has been working on the unofficial Grand Theft Auto 5 port for Nintendo's hybrid console for quite some time. According to the developer, earlier builds suffered from broken lighting, graphical issues, and frequent crashes. Based on the latest updates, those problems have largely been addressed, with the game now booting properly and allowing players to complete the story prologue.
In a recent update, Mosjo confirmed that development has already moved beyond the prologue. The developer also noted that cutscene audio and the pause menu music are now functioning correctly.

That said, performance is still a long way from ideal. The port currently runs at around 20 FPS, while Mosjo's goal is to achieve a stable 30 FPS at 720p. According to the developer, the Nintendo Switch's CPU remains the biggest bottleneck, making the hardware itself the primary obstacle to further progress.
You can follow Mosjo's progress on X, where the developer regularly shares work-in-progress updates. Judging by the pace of development, the project has already overcome its most fragile stage—where everything constantly broke—and is now focused on more practical challenges like stability and performance optimization.
Previously, it was also reported that the KytyPS5 0.0.3 emulator managed to boot the PS5 version of GTA 5 on PC.
Do you think this unofficial port has a chance of reaching a stable 30 FPS on the Nintendo Switch?
