PlayStation Fans Plan Week-Long Blackout Over Sony's Disc Decision

PlayStation supporters are preparing a week-long #PSBlackout for late August, urging players to boycott Sony Interactive Entertainment after the company's decision to end physical game disc production. Does It Play? announced the campaign in an X post, calling on players to join an economic and gameplay blackout.

The organizers want participants to stop using PlayStation consoles and avoid purchases across the PlayStation ecosystem for seven days. A softer version of the protest is also being promoted: players can simply turn off their console or log out of their account for the week.

The campaign is aimed at Sony's plan to stop producing physical discs of new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. In the protest statement, the company is accused of drifting farther away from its fan base, and the blackout is presented as a response to that direction.

The statement also criticizes Sony for closing studios, pushing live-service games, canceling fan events, and leaving PS VR2 behind. Organizers say bringing back physical games would only be "meeting players halfway," and they also name the franchises they miss: Twisted Metal, SOCOM, Sly Cooper, and Resistance.

At the time of writing, MP1st said the boycott account had more than 10,000 likes and more than 3,700 shares. PlayGround.ru also noted that digital sales already dominate PlayStation, while physical copies make up only a small part of the market.

Earlier, Alanah Pearce discussed PlayStation disc backlash, revealing that employees were instructed to avoid the topic amid the controversy.
