Fan-Made Portal Remake Is Finished, But Valve Hasn't Approved Its Release
After 14 years in development, the fan remake has reached the finish line — but Valve still has not given it the green light. Portal: Alive & Kicking, built as a reimagining of Portal 2, has been finished for some time, yet the team says it remains stuck waiting for the rights holder to approve publication.
The project was conceived as a full reimagining of the original Portal using the technology of Portal 2. According to the developers, they used source code previously provided by Valve itself, which makes the silence around the project even more frustrating for fans.
Dot Operator, the mod's developer, said the team first signed an NDA and later signed a non-commercial release form, but still did not hear back from Valve.
We used the source code that Valve gave us. We signed a non-disclosure agreement, but there was no non-commercial release agreement at first. We have now signed it, but there is still no response.
Dot Operator added that the team has no way to release the mod, even outside Steam, without Valve's approval.
The developers also tried to contact Valve through Steam support, but that did not lead to any response. In the meantime, the situation has become a talking point among fans because the remake has been finished for months, yet it remains unavailable.
A recent report also noted that a Backrooms director visited Valve and said he wanted to make a film based on Portal.
Should Valve finally approve Portal: Alive & Kicking, or keep the finished remake locked away?
