According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft has canceled an extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, which had been in development under the codename Maverick. Instead, the company has already moved forward with a brand-new project in the franchise, codenamed Kodiak.

Sources told the outlet that Kodiak recently completed its concept phase and has officially entered full production at Vantage Studios. The project is reportedly built on some of the foundations laid by the canceled Maverick, but Ubisoft has abandoned the extraction-shooter direction in favor of a more traditional open-world experience.

The new title is described as an ambitious open-world FPS focused on player interactions and emergent stories shaped by players' actions. According to the report, the game is still several years away from release.

Meanwhile, development of Blackbird, the next mainline Far Cry game, is also ongoing. The project reportedly faced multiple internal delays in the past, but development is now said to be back on track. It will also feature a multiplayer mode, allowing multiple players to explore the world together.

Additionally, in an internal interview at Vantage Studios, Charlie Guillemot reportedly described Blackbird as "honestly impressive" and referred to it as "Act One," suggesting Ubisoft hopes to build on the game's concept with future entries if it proves successful.

Ubisoft has not officially confirmed the existence of Kodiak or commented on the cancellation of Maverick.

Incidentally, it was recently reported that Steve Buscemi has joined FX's Far Cry TV series.

An extraction shooter is a genre where the main objective is to collect valuable loot and successfully extract from the map.

Do you think Ubisoft made the right call by abandoning an extraction-based Far Cry game, or would you have liked to see the series take that direction?
