Resident Evil Overtakes Final Fantasy in Sales as Franchise Record-Breaker Revealed
Capcom has released its latest quarterly report, revealing that Resident Evil has officially overtaken Final Fantasy in lifetime sales. As of July 28, 2026, the survival horror franchise leads by a margin of one million copies.
Total lifetime sales for Resident Evil have hit 213 million copies worldwide. In comparison, Final Fantasy sits at 212 million units, according to the same data. This makes Capcom's flagship horror series the best-selling Japanese gaming franchise outside of Nintendo's lineup.
Additionally, Capcom confirmed that the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake has reached 19.75 million copies sold. The reimagined sequel is now officially the best-selling entry in the entire franchise, dethroning Resident Evil 5, which had held the record for 17 years.
The latest mainline entry is also performing exceptionally well; Resident Evil Requiem has already surpassed 8.06 million copies sold. The company continues to lean heavily into revamping classic titles to maintain a consistent release schedule.
Revisiting older titles and creating remakes helps Capcom put out a Resident Evil game every year, while also giving the team a chance to constantly hone their skills.
As a quick reminder, a prominent insider recently revealed the launch window for Resident Evil Requiem's upcoming story DLC.
What do you think of these numbers? Can Resident Evil hold its ground against Final Fantasy in the long run?
