Sony in Talks with Retailers Over Transition to Digital-Only Releases
Sony has already begun discussions with global retailers regarding PlayStation’s shift to a fully digital format. The company confirmed it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028. Boxed editions in North America are already being sold disc-free, containing only a digital download code.
According to Sony CFO Lin Tao, the company aims to find a mutually beneficial solution with its regional partners, adding that Sony intends to proceed with caution.
Financially, ditching physical media doesn't look like a risky gamble for Sony. The company anticipates no short-term negative impact on its business, as the vast majority of its software sales are already digital. Consequently, phasing out discs is unlikely to hurt future financial performance.
At the same time, Sony openly acknowledged that players have a strong emotional attachment to buying and owning physical discs. Management claims they understand these feelings and intend to monitor community feedback, even as the digital model expands.
Against this backdrop, it’s highly telling that digital downloads accounted for 82% of all PS4 and PS5 game sales during the reported period. Sony also reported growth in its gaming division, with revenue hitting 937.1 billion yen and operating profit surging by 37%. Additionally, lifetime PS5 sales reached 95.3 million units by June 2026, with an additional 1.6 million consoles shipped in the latest quarter.
Driven by these strong metrics, Sony seems determined to stay the digital course, despite fan backlash and pushback from retail networks.
We will proceed cautiously.
Earlier, PlayStation gamers announced a boycott over Sony's move away from physical discs.
