Respawn to Shut Down Apex Legends on Original Nintendo Switch

With the launch of Season 30, Apex Legends will officially drop support for the original Nintendo Switch. Developer Respawn Entertainment announced that the battle royale will stop running on the legacy console starting August 4. However, the game will remain fully playable on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

This makes Season 29 the final chapter for Apex Legends on the original hybrid hardware. In-game premium currency purchases will also be disabled on the platform starting August 4, though previously bought items and overall progress will remain intact. The developers highlighted that all unlocked content, purchases, and stats are tied directly to players' EA Accounts. Thanks to cross-progression, all Apex Coins, cosmetics, and career history will automatically carry over to the Nintendo Switch 2 whenever players choose to upgrade.

The studio cited hardware limitations as the main reason for the shutdown, stating that the original Nintendo Switch has reached the absolute limit of its performance capabilities. The system's aging graphics hardware can no longer support the ongoing evolution of the live-service title. While the game required major technical compromises to run on the first Switch, the Switch 2 promises to deliver a vastly superior experience with uncompromised quality.
