Nintendo got angry parent calls over an Animal Crossing gyroid

Former Nintendo Counselor Rick Sandbom remembered that Animal Crossing on GameCube could trigger an unexpected kind of customer support headache: parents called Nintendo after mistaking one of the game's gyroids for something obscene.

The story resurfaced thanks to a snippet from the August 2004 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, which featured comments from Sandbom. His recollection makes clear that the calls were not a one-off oddity, but a recurring support issue serious enough to be remembered years later.

We got a lot of angry calls about Animal Crossing.

Sandbom said the object at the center of the complaints was the gyroid placed in front of each player's house. He noted that parents thought it looked like a wiggling penis, and added that Nintendo even kept a special database page for handling that exact call.

He also said he never personally took those calls, because they were always routed to hotline veterans. In other words, the more experienced support staff were the ones trusted to calm down frustrated parents and explain what they were actually looking at.

There is also a small technical wrinkle to the whole story: in 2002, many people were playing Animal Crossing on CRT televisions, where colors and fine details could blur together. What looks harmless today could have seemed a lot less innocent on an older screen.

Did old CRT screens make this Animal Crossing gyroid look worse than intended?
